GYNECOMASTIA (BREAST ENLARGEMENT IN MALES)
In some males, breasts are larger than ordinary case. Gynecomastia surgery is an esthetic surgery in order to restore the breasts to their normal dimensions in breasts largeness seen in males.
The most common cause of breast largeness in males is the structural breast largeness and the breast largeness elicited with gaining weight.
Some diseases and hormonal disorders may lead also breast largeness.
Testicular tumors, adrenal tumors, thyroid diseases, hepatic diseases, some cancer types, antidepressants, narcotizing substances, some medications used for the purpose of body building and alcohol consumption may lead breast largeness. Several tests should be performed to distinguish them and to establish the diagnosis.
The breast largeness seen in the adolescence should not be confused with the gynecomastia. The breasts return to their normal dimensions, when the hormones are balanced after the adolescence.
We perform gynecomastia surgery basically via two methods.
Liposuction: If there is a growth due to the excess of fatty tissue in the breast, they can be reduced by means of liposuction procedure.
Removal of breast tissue: The largeness of some breasts is not due to the excess of the fatty tissue, but it is related with the excess of the breast tissue compared to the normal case and due to the largeness of the breast tissue.
In this types of breasts, excess of breast tissue is removed by performing an incision in the lunar shape. If there is also an excess of skin, skin is restored together with a thin line.
The gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Screenings in terms of blood levels, liver function tests, renal function tests, clothing values and contagious diseases by making blood analyses of the patients before the surgery. The status of the lungs is investigated by acquiring pulmonary X-ray films and the heart rhythm and cardiac status are investigated by taking electrocardiography (ECG). Furthermore, if the patient has an additional disease, tests concerning this disease are made and consultation are established from the concerning department about whether he or she has any status that will hinder the surgery if necessary.
Smoking is a factor affecting unfavorably the wound healing. We suggest the patients consuming tobacco products to cease smoking at least one week before the surgery. People should cease anticoagulant drugs and herbal supplements before surgery. We lead to cease these drugs by consulting to the department advising these drugs about whether these people have any obstacle to cease these drugs.
Gynecomastia surgery lasts one to two hours.
In the gynecomastia surgeries, we can discharge from the hospital usually on the same days.
The recovery period lasts approximately ten days after the surgery.
People return to their social life approximately in three days. One week is required to return to the professional life.
Several traces in a half-centimeter length persist around the breast in people in which breast reduction is performed via liposuction.
If tissue removal is required, traces in the shape of thin lines persist on the skin with respect to the tissue amount to be removed. Their prominence diminishes with time.
